How To Not Ruin Your Skin This Fall | Best Skincare Advice
There is something about September that makes us want to reorganize our entire lives. New clothes. New routines. A new skincare lineup.
Your skin responds to changes in the environment.
As temperatures drop, the air becomes drier. Indoor heating can make things even worse.
The result? A few weeks into fall, your skin may suddenly feel tight, rough, flaky, irritated... Think of fall skincare as a season of protecting, repairing, and simplifying.
Here is what your skin actually needs this season.
1) Make barrier support your fall priority
Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, largely made up of lipids, including ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. It helps keep water inside the skin while protecting it from external irritants.
A compromised barrier can leave skin feeling tight, sensitive, rough or unusually reactive. Focus on keeping your barrier comfortable and supported. Look for moisturizers containing ingredients such as:
Ceramides
Cholesterol
Fatty acids
Glycerin
Squalane
Panthenol
Colloidal oatmeal
And remember: a good moisturizer does not have to be extremely thick to be effective. Your skin type, climate, and personal tolerance matter much more.
2) Be Careful With Exfoliation
Fall has a reputation for being the perfect time to treat your skin.
After months of sunshine and sweat, it can be tempting to reach for exfoliating acids, lasers, and peels.
Exfoliation can be useful. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, and other exfoliants can help. The problem is overdoing it.
If your skin is becoming dry or irritated as the weather changes, increasing exfoliation can potentially make the barrier problem worse.
If your skin feels comfortable, your usual exfoliation routine may be perfectly fine. If it starts feeling tight, stinging, flaky or unusually sensitive, consider reducing the frequency.
3) Do not abandon sunscreen just because summer is over
UV radiation does not disappear when summer ends. UVA rays, in particular, are present throughout the year and can contribute to premature skin aging and pigmentation. Clouds also do not provide reliable protection from UV exposure.
It means that sunscreen should remain a consistent part of your morning routine, particularly when you will be spending meaningful time outdoors. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that you genuinely enjoy wearing. The best SPF is ultimately the one you will use consistently. If you are using ingredients that can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, such as retinoids or exfoliating acids, daily sun protection becomes even more important.
4) Do not confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not quite the same.
Dry skin refers to a skin type that produces less oil.
Dehydrated skin refers to a temporary lack of water in the skin.
That distinction matters because you can have oily skin that is dehydrated.
In the fall, environmental changes can increase water loss from the skin, so even people who have oily skin may suddenly experience tightness.
Ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid and panthenol help attract and retain water in the skin. You also want ingredients that help reduce water loss and support the barrier. Think of your routine as:
Hydrate → moisturize → protect
5) Don’t Be Tempted By a Hot Shower
When it gets cold outside, a very hot shower becomes incredibly tempting.
Unfortunately, very hot water can strip some of the skin's natural oils and increase dryness and irritation, especially when your skin is already dealing with a colder, drier environment.
Aim for warm rather than extremely hot water, keep showers reasonably short, and moisturize your body afterward.
Pro tip: apply body oil on wet skin, it will stay incredibly soft for days!
The Bottom Line
As we move from summer into fall, the biggest changes to pay attention to are temperature, humidity, sun exposure, and indoor heating. Your skincare routine should respond to those environmental changes rather than blindly following seasonal beauty trends.
